Hashimoto Action Plan II released

The United Nations Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation (UNSGAB) is embarking on its next strategic phase with the release of the Hashimoto Action Plan II.

IPCC Technical Paper on Climate Change and Water

This Technical Paper addresses the issue of freshwater. Sealevel rise is dealt with only insofar as it can lead to impacts on freshwater in coastal areas and beyond. Climate, freshwater, biophysical and socio-economic systems are interconnected in complex ways. Hence, a change in any one of these can induce a change in any other. Freshwater-related issues are critical in determining key regional and sectoral vulnerabilities. Therefore, the relationship between climate change and freshwater resources is of primary concern to human society and also has implications for all living species.

Clean Water for a Healthy World

22 March 2010, worldwide • World Water Day

WWDay_bluebutton120x90UN-Water is dedicating World Water Day 2010 to the theme of water quality, reflecting its importance alongside quantity of the resource in water management.  On World Water Day, we reaffirm that clean water is life, and our lives depend on how we protect the quality of our water.  Water is the basis of life on earth.

Short course on Water Conflict Management

UNESCO’s PCCP and the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education are organizing two short courses on «Negotiation and mediation for water conflict management», which will take place in The Hague and Delft, The Netherlands.

Conference on Modelling Hydrology, Climate and Land Surface Processes

14–16 September 2010, Lillehammer • Organized by the Norwegian IHP Committee and the Norsk hydrologiråd. The integration of hydrology and meteorology is crucial for understanding the future climate and its effects on the infrastructure of society. From recent discussion in Norway we see topics like extreme weather, landslides and new demands for renewable energy which are all strongly linked to the hydro-meteorological system.

Environmental isotopes in the hydrological cycle: Principles and applications

The changes in the isotopic composition of water in the water cycle occur primarily during the passage of water into and through the atmosphere. The specific isotopic signatures engendered by these processes are then imprinted on the terrestrial water bodies, forming the basis for the many applications of isotopes in hydrological studies. A detailed understanding of the complex and changing processes involved is thus a necessary pre-condition for the use of this tool in studies of present and past climatic systems.

Outcome of the international experts’ meeting on the Right to Water

The main purpose of the meeting (Paris, 7–8 July 2009) was to bring together international experts to discuss and develop recommendations on the right to water and access to sanitation, which are presented in a booklet.

Water footprint calculation standards

In the field of carbon footprints we have seen how detrimental the absence of shared definitions and calculation methods can be. One common language is crucial, otherwise it is difficult to share information about actual footprints and reduction targets.

Pieter van der Zaag explains why irrigated areas expand only very slowly

In his interesting Viewpoint article in Water Alternatives, Bruce Lankford suggests that an African Green Revolution cannot come about without irrigation. But he does not convincingly explain why irrigated areas expand only very slowly.

Saltwater and freshwater interactions in coastal aquifers

The February 2010 issue of Hydrogeology Journal (Vol 18, No 1) focuses on «Saltwater and freshwater interactions in coastal aquifers».
