All around the world, people are increasingly exposed to disaster risk from natural hazards such as floods, droughts, storms and cyclones. Most hazards are water-related, often exacerbated by inadequate water and natural resources management.

The continuing trend of wetland degradation increases the vulnerability of millions of people in both rural and urban environments. Improved management and restoration of our wetlands – rivers, lakes, marshes, mangroves and many others – is a fundamental, yet underrated aspect of disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation that deserves more attention.

Wetlands International has extensive, worldwide experience of working in partnership with humanitarian and development organisations to influence practice and policies at EU and global level. Wetlands International – European Association brings together eight European NGOs committed to safeguarding and restoring wetlands to mitigate disaster risks and enhance the resilience of people and nature to hazardous events.
